CECC History
The club was formerly known as Calthorpe CC and was formed sometime before 1874 in Calthorpe Street WC1X between Grays Inn Road and Farringdon Road in North London. In its original form the club was mainly associated with the Tuffnell family whose coat of arms included the boars head which adorns the clubs logo.
The club began playing cricket at its present ground on the Shepherds Cot N8 in the early 1900s, and has remained there ever since. The clubs fortunes, as with all clubs, have waxed and waned over the years. A particular highlight for the club was the opening of the new rebuilt pavilion on 10th July 1993 with duties being conducted by Clive Lloyd, former West Indies Captain, Reg Scarlett, West Indies test player, and Krish Mackerdhuj, former President of the United Cricket Board of South Africa.
In September 2010 the club was the location for Kevin Pietersen's blindfold cricket viral in which he showed us his famous 'switch hit' prowess in an advert for Brylcreem. The film has attracted almost 300,000 hits on youtube sending CECC round the world.
Since 1993, the club has steadily consolidated its league position in the Middlesex Championship. The 1st team won the second division championship in 2005, and the 2nd team saw it’s highest ever finish in Division 2 in 2010. With our 3rd team playing in the 1987 League (Division 4) cementing it's position within 2 years of being the team being established and finishing 3rd in 2009 and 2010. The 4th team began playing league cricket in 2011.
On Sundays, we offer league (Chess Valley Sunday League, Division 4) and friendly cricket playing in and around Middlesex and Hertfordshire offering the great chance to experience village green cricket at some great venues.
The club changed its name to Crouch End Cricket Club in time for the 2009 season and has celebrated consecutive promotions since to Division 3 of the Chess Valley Sunday League. 2010 was a remarkable year for the club with all the Saturday teams consolidating further their positions in their respective divisions.
With an excellently run colts partnership with Islington Cricket Club, we also maintain our reputation through Yvette and 2.sixteeen of offering one of the best cricket teas in Middlesex.
The future looks very bright built on the core principles of providing competitive and enjoyable cricket played in friendly and welcoming surroundings. We structure the club for the benefit of members and the beautiful game and the club is proud to act as an emerging focal point and venue for the wider community of Crouch End and its North London surroundings.
Come join us at the Calthorpe Ground, Park Road N8 8JJ.
