1st v Middlesex Tamils

A low target, a tight chase and a big crowd.  10 points and Vodka Redbulls all round.

At 30-4, the Tamils sensibly, un Tamil-like, rebuilt their innings.  Only for it to be blown away from an all round solid bowling and fielding performance.

Solid but unspectacular, perhaps lacking a little guile and imagination.  Like Joleon Lescott... presumably without the massive facial disfigurement.  Or James Milner, without the massive technical…

3rds vs Finchley, Indian Gymkhana and Shepherd's Bush - The Bad, The Worse and The Good.

Match Report Update:

10.6.12 - Finchley (Away) - Poor

17.6.12 - Indian Gymkhana - God Awful

So...

CECC won the toss and decided to .... you know the rest. Shashi bowled very well, picked up 4 wickets, went for 1 an over and wound up the umpire. Kashif also bowled well, picked up a very good caught and bowled, but didn't wind up the umpire. Shepherd's Bush initially looked handy with the bat, but after the first couple wickets tumbled their middle order…

4th XI v. Old Actonians (A) Sat 22nd June

Old Actonians 4th XI play in the attractive setting of a local school’s 1st XI pitch with a good modern pavilion and with very good teas.  Unfortunately Crouch End didn’t make the most of the circumstances.

Waqaas’s early promise was cut short when Khalid ran him out.  When your uncle tells you to run even when you have given him a loud firm ‘no’ I suppose you have to do as you’re told.   Peter was bowled by a good inswinger, Simon was LBW to one he,…

1st V Old Actonians

After beating a poor Old A's two weeks ago, I was informed by the oppo that next time would be different.  They were right, they were worse.

A lot can happen in two weeks, you can work on your sledging, perfect your dead bat block and with both of these finely honed put in another crap performance against Crouch End.

Crouch End were sent in and slowly built a score of 180 from 51 overs.  Ali's 50 was uncharateristically slow and restrained, evidence of the total lack…

4th XI v. Edmonton (H) Sat 16th June

The 4th XI took full points from their game against Edmonton on Sat 15th June but made such heavy weather of it that there was an air of disappointment about the event.

It was the first game at our new home ground, no more than 200 yards from Edmonton’s own ground; yet the opposition could only raise seven players.

The pitch was slow; and, in an atmosphere of unreality, a reasonable bowling performance by Des Khan, Kevin Butler, Tom and…

1st XI v Alexandra Park

A draw.  We were poor.  We dropped catches - they win matches.

Poor by our newly high standards.  In truth, the only poor was the catching.  Several easy chances went down allowing AP to scrape towards 190.

At 39-4, AP were looking at a comfortable win until the Jennings brothers put together a gritty/classy partnership.  No guessing as to who matches what adjective.

Lets look closer at those words and their actual meanings.

Gritty - Tough, reliable,…

3rds vs Indian Gymkhana - "All Right Let's Calm Down"

ROB'S TEAM NAME DISSECTION MASTERCLASS

The dictionary defines a gymkhana as an arena where a sporting event takes place. In modern parlance it has been usually associated with show jumping, however it can be applied to any recreational activity such as cricket, mixed badger baiting, Burmese stick waving, street campanology or monkey tennis. Indian, on the other hand, is defined as any person or object eminating for the country of India. Anyway to the game...

CECC won the toss…

4th XI v. Hornsey 5th XI, away, Sat 2nd June 2012

The 4th XI broke a few Crouch End/Calthorpe records on Saturday, away against Edmonton 5ths, yet failed to win the match.

333 for 1 is, as far as the Chairman knows, the highest score any CE/C team has scored; and the first wicket stand of 291 between Khalid and his nephew, Waqaas, playing his first game for the club, is the club’s highest ever partnership.

The game was played on the pitch squeezed between Edmonton’s first table and the A10. It has proved a productive ground…

1st XI v Old Actonians

We won.  We were shit.  They were pissed.  Surprised?

Surprised that we chased down 175 at 90-6.

Mosh then took apart some ropey spin for a bullish 31.  No 9 Arif calmly and decisively guided us home with a mixture of clinical hitting and aggressive running.  Marcel also had a huge influence with 10* at no 10 proving that perhaps this year the backbone won't break and the tail will wag.

What made the win most satisfying was that Crouch End didn't…
