3rds vs. Alexandra Park 3rds - So near, yet so far

Saturday was hot.  Very hot.  Thankfully we only had a short trip to Alexandra Park to negotiate.  The toss was lost and we were asked to bat on a dry, hard and dusty wicket.  It looked like a good toss to lose and save ourselves an afternoon wilting in the sun.  This would be a real test of our excellent good form against a side that caused us plenty of problems in the reverse fixture.

Jon and Khairul opened and progress was brisk with both exploiting loose deliveries from…

4th XI v. Wembley 4ths at Edmonton Saturday 23rd July 2016

It’s not often the 4th XI have a well balanced side, but against Wembley 4ths on Saturday there were four seamers, six batsmen and a wicket-keeper-batsman at No 7; and this was conspicuously a game in which many contributed.

Crouch End were asked to field in very hot conditions and Dhamendra took an early wicket; but it took 15 overs of stalemate - no wickets and very few runs – for him to get the next one, caught by Mike the ‘keeper who then repeated the trick off…

4th XI v. Perivale Phoenicians (a) Sat 16th July 2016

There was clear evidence on Saturday that the challenge is not the opposition but ourselves.  Perivale 4th are the sort of team we should be able to match.

If any side had the players playing below their true grade it was us.  Having lost the toss Crouch End batted and Darren, testing out his injured knee, made a typically belligerent start.  It was a pleasant change to see the opposition wilt at the sight of a big-hitting, experienced batsman offering the prospect of a…

3rds vs. Teddington 4ths - New Balls Please

Last Saturday saw us take on fourth placed Teddington at our Edmonton home.  They had beaten us in the first game and were lurking just four points below us in the table.  Despite this, I was cautiously optimistic given our recent good run of form.  The side saw four changes from that which has performed so well over the last five weeks.

Despite the warm day, the pitch was very green.  After three successive toss losses, my luck returned and Teddington were asked to bat. …

3rds v Edmonton 3rds - The Thrill of the Chase

After last week’s heroics against league leaders Hampstead and the subsequent euphoria, it was always going to be a tricky and different challenge against bottom side Edmonton.  On paper a match against a side that had lost all nine previous games and not gained a single point looked a formality.  It proved anything but that.

With great availability this week, it was pleasing to be able to name 10 of those that beat Hampstead.  Keith replaced Dilan behind the stumps as the…

4th XI v. Chiswick (h) Sat 10th July 2016

For the second week running the 4th XI came up against a side with a lot of experience.  This was considered a strong Crouch End team and it was happy to be put in to bat.  However, George went in the first over, Tom was put out of his misery when he eventually got an edge, and progress was understandably slow in the face of some very tidy bowling.  Mike D and Naggers waited patiently for a hittable ball and slowly got the run rate from one-an-over to the dizzy heights of almost…

4th Xi v. Acton (h) Sat 2nd July 2016

Having won the toss the Crouch End top order faced one very accomplished bowler and got themselves out to the bloke at the other end.  One Robbie Singh, returning to cricket by way of the Acton  4th XI, landed the ball on a length and moved it both ways.  Naggers alone, briefly supported by Vaibhai, Ruskin and Nino, managed both to keep him out and not surrender to the pie-chucker at the other end, scoring 48 out of the Crouch End total of 114 in 43 overs.  Acton…

3rds v Hampstead 4ths - This Is Why We Play Cricket

Last Saturday was always going to be the true test of how good we are this season, or how good we think we are.  It does not get tougher than Hampstead away – here is a side that we got promoted with but won the league at a canter and have won all bar one of their matches this season.  They only didn’t win that one game because of last weekend’s rain.  They had not lost since we beat them on the first day of last season.

Be warned – this is a long one, so settle in.  There’s…

3rds v Indian Gymkana 4ths - Rain, Rain, Go Away ...

Saturday was a funny day.  After much rain during the week, some of it at a biblical level, the forecast was for more during the match.  With the middle of the division very congested – seven points separating third from eighth – any points gained could be crucial, especially as some matches may be abandoned or struggle to finish.

The pitch was green and I lost my first toss of the season.  We were put in to bat and as we began, so did a few spots of rain.  Nine of the side…

3rds v Richmond 5ths - Finding Our Feet

I thought I’d got away with it this week – it was 10am on Saturday morning and I was standing in the queue at the Post Office waiting to collect a parcel.  No changes, no cry offs – the team was as selected on Wednesday night for the first time this season.  Then Hiren called.

Someone had dropped out from the first team.  Cue the domino effect and much calling around, movement of this person and then that person.  Thanks to much last minute help from Peter – what would the…

3rds v Finchley 4ths - The Game We Had To Win

We did not have the best preparation for our important match against struggling Finchley.  They were one of only two teams below us at the start of play and the importance of opening up a significant gap between us and them was high.  Therefore a drop out at 10pm followed by much ringing around to rectify the situation was not ideal.

Neither was the fact that GoogleMaps potentially sent us to one location, while AppleMaps sent us to the correct one.  Anyway, most of us made…

4th XI v Hornsey 4th XI (Away) Saturday 4th June

Having won the toss the Hornsey skipper couldn’t wait to unleash his young opening bowlers on us.  One in particular had a very productive method.  He bowled consistent speedy in swingers which lead to dozens of LBW appeals, three of them successful, one of which, to our great disappointment, was Kairul’s first ball.

Shiva however survived a first ball appeal; and it was just as well he did since his 55 was the backbone of the Crouch End innings.  It was a mature, measured,…

Crouch End 4th v AP 5th (Friendly - League opposition cancelled.)

A sort report to add to Peter's email:

Before bowling AP 5th out for 35 we had posted 200 for 8 in 40 overs.

We had Neil, a friend of Ruaridh playing a long way below his grade, who got a quick 50, Abdul a care-free 30-odd and Hassan a very sensible 50 not out.

Chanchal and Hamid both got runs and then bowled well with the new ball.  Hassan also impressed with the ball given his limited opportunity; and another of Ruaridh’s friends,…

3rd XI v Alexandra Park 3rd XI - Reality Check

Saturday was the day that we truly noticed we are in a higher league.  After an opening day win against a disorganised Edmonton and a defeat away at Teddington that left those present lamenting a missed opportunity, the focus turned to Alexandra Park.  They were relegated last year and playing two divisions higher than us.  For the most part, it showed.

An iffy weather forecast and a green damp wicket at our Edmonton home made the decision to put AP in to bat an easy one.  We…

4th Xi v Chiswick 3rd XI Sat 7th May 2016

Crouch End 4th XI v Chiswick 3rd XI.  Saturday 7th May 2016 at Chiswick.

Apologies for late arrival of report: the bones of it were presented by Peter on Sunday.

We bowled very well against their top order, Damendra and Joe bowling very few bad balls and keeping the run rate down to 3 an over for the first 20 overs.  Hikmatullah’s late arrival meant his late addition to the attack, but his pace was good and his line exemplary and he proceeded…

3rd XI vs. Edmonton 3rds - Up and Running Again

So the day finally arrived.  The one we had been waiting for since September – our first match ever in Division 2 of The 1987 League, marking the highest level that the 3rd XI have played at.  For me, it had been an even longer wait after having to watch the last six weeks of our promotion push from the sidelines as my finger bones tried to fuse themselves back together.

We were set to go.  A very late drop out on Saturday morning, combined with the 4th XI having already left…
