4th XI v. Wembley 4ths at Edmonton Saturday 23rd July 2016

It’s not often the 4th XI have a well balanced side, but against Wembley 4ths on Saturday there were four seamers, six batsmen and a wicket-keeper-batsman at No 7; and this was conspicuously a game in which many contributed.

Crouch End were asked to field in very hot conditions and Dhamendra took an early wicket; but it took 15 overs of stalemate - no wickets and very few runs – for him to get the next one, caught by Mike the ‘keeper who then repeated the trick off…

4th XI v. Perivale Phoenicians (a) Sat 16th July 2016

There was clear evidence on Saturday that the challenge is not the opposition but ourselves.  Perivale 4th are the sort of team we should be able to match.

If any side had the players playing below their true grade it was us.  Having lost the toss Crouch End batted and Darren, testing out his injured knee, made a typically belligerent start.  It was a pleasant change to see the opposition wilt at the sight of a big-hitting, experienced batsman offering the prospect of a…

4th XI v. Chiswick (h) Sat 10th July 2016

For the second week running the 4th XI came up against a side with a lot of experience.  This was considered a strong Crouch End team and it was happy to be put in to bat.  However, George went in the first over, Tom was put out of his misery when he eventually got an edge, and progress was understandably slow in the face of some very tidy bowling.  Mike D and Naggers waited patiently for a hittable ball and slowly got the run rate from one-an-over to the dizzy heights of almost…

4th Xi v. Acton (h) Sat 2nd July 2016

Having won the toss the Crouch End top order faced one very accomplished bowler and got themselves out to the bloke at the other end.  One Robbie Singh, returning to cricket by way of the Acton  4th XI, landed the ball on a length and moved it both ways.  Naggers alone, briefly supported by Vaibhai, Ruskin and Nino, managed both to keep him out and not surrender to the pie-chucker at the other end, scoring 48 out of the Crouch End total of 114 in 43 overs.  Acton…

4th XI v Hornsey 4th XI (Away) Saturday 4th June

Having won the toss the Hornsey skipper couldn’t wait to unleash his young opening bowlers on us.  One in particular had a very productive method.  He bowled consistent speedy in swingers which lead to dozens of LBW appeals, three of them successful, one of which, to our great disappointment, was Kairul’s first ball.

Shiva however survived a first ball appeal; and it was just as well he did since his 55 was the backbone of the Crouch End innings.  It was a mature, measured,…

Crouch End 4th v AP 5th (Friendly - League opposition cancelled.)

A sort report to add to Peter's email:

Before bowling AP 5th out for 35 we had posted 200 for 8 in 40 overs.

We had Neil, a friend of Ruaridh playing a long way below his grade, who got a quick 50, Abdul a care-free 30-odd and Hassan a very sensible 50 not out.

Chanchal and Hamid both got runs and then bowled well with the new ball.  Hassan also impressed with the ball given his limited opportunity; and another of Ruaridh’s friends,…

4th Xi v Chiswick 3rd XI Sat 7th May 2016

Crouch End 4th XI v Chiswick 3rd XI.  Saturday 7th May 2016 at Chiswick.

Apologies for late arrival of report: the bones of it were presented by Peter on Sunday.

We bowled very well against their top order, Damendra and Joe bowling very few bad balls and keeping the run rate down to 3 an over for the first 20 overs.  Hikmatullah’s late arrival meant his late addition to the attack, but his pace was good and his line exemplary and he proceeded…

4th XI v. SKLP (h) at Edmonton Sat. 9th May 2015

The 4th XI lost the toss and were put in by SKLP but got the League season off to a good start.  Apu got in some early big blows before miss-hitting and sky-ing to slip.  KK however was more circumspect playing SKPL’s only threatening bowling with great good sense before making telling blows of his own.  Shashi too was forced into playing good defensive shots at one end while playing like an idiot at the other.  He started to find the middle after a while and rattled up 48 via…

4th XI v. Hornsey 4th (h) Sat 28th June

Prospects for any play seemed unlikely at 1pm in Edmonton for the 4th XI’s home game against Hornsey 4ths.  But by 2pm the skies brightened and with it the groundsman’s demeanour; and a soggy game ensued.  The toss was lost and Crouch End’s innings made a soggy start.  On a slow pitch runs only seemed possible from extravagant hits which led to several cross-batted departures and a run rate after twenty overs scarcely above three an over.  The innings was rescued however by a…

4th XI v. Turnham Green Poly 4th XI – (H) Sat 17th August

Everyone knows how capricious the Church Road wicket can be.  On Saturday 17th Aug against Turnham Green Poly the pitch decided to favour the home side.

When Crouch End batted and the score rose comfortably at 5 an over it looked as if the pitch was being a bit better behaved.  Only Richard had suffered at its irregularities having two balls rise off a length at him and then being LBW to one that shot along the ground.  Generally though the change in batting…

4th XI v. North Middlesex V (H) Sat 6th July

Self-belief seems to be returning to the 4th XI.  They were able to put out a fairly strong side which despite some moments of anxiety proved too strong for their hitherto successful opponents.

Crouch End were grateful for not having to field in the heat of the day.  David and KK survived both a useful opening attack and the inconsistencies of the Church Road pitch to give a respectable start.  KK started accumulating runs off the bad balls and, after David’s LBW…

4th XI v. Wembley Vs (H) Sat 8th Sept

Beware of triumphalism.  The opposition are not the enemy but fellow participants.  I’m stating the obvious here but you don’t have a game unless there are two sides.  The margins between success and failure are often extremely small; and in this case rather than hooting and hollering and jumping up and down having taken the 8th and final Wembley wicket, we should have been celebrating the honour of a 16 year-old colt who gave his captain out LBW on the last ball of the…

4th XI v. Turnham Green & Polytechnic (A) Sat 1st September 2012

Only a brief report required this week since the 4th XI’s defeat at the hands of Turnham Green on Saturday followed a familiar pattern.  A decent performance in the field, marred only by a crucial dropped catch, was followed by a naïve attempt at a run chase.

Asked to field Crouch End started well enough.  Dhamendra put in another excellent shift: Anisul was fierce but inclined to bowl short but  both picked up a wicket.  Rony replaced Anisul: and the best period…

4th XI friendly v. St Ignatius (A) Sat 25th August 2012

The 4th XI Friendly against St Ignatius old boys turned out surprisingly well. It started with most of the team, one by one, taking the captain to one side to explain where or whether they’d like to bowl/bat/keep wicket. Departure was delayed by about 40 minutes as we waited for one of the cars to arrive; and under lowering skies the captain missed the exit from the A10 and in the several-miles it took to rectify the situation participated in a lengthy traffic jam. The toss was lost by a…

4th XI v. Swamibapa (A) Sat 18th August

The 4th XI fixture, away to Swamibapa on Saturday, proceeded without incident and without any Crouch End points.

At least there was no incident once the game started.  At the toss however our umpire and the opposition captain quickly found each other’s point of view and/or means of expressing it objectionable.  The umpire decided the chances of a satisfactory game-long relationship were slim and walked away.  The game managed to govern…

4th XI v. Bessborough 4th XI (H) Sat 11th Aug

The 4th XI game at home to Bessborough on Saturday followed very much the same pattern as the game the week before: a low target, a tense but successful run chase; but this time it was Crouch End who batted first.

Bessborough opened up with the same boy who had reduced Crouch End to 8 for 5 a couple of weeks ago. At the other end they unveiled a similarly precocious talent; and things didn’t go much better this time. It wasn’t a procession: Khalid, Bernard, newcomer Mohammed and…

4th XI v. Swamibapa (H) Sat 4th Aug 2012

This was a slow burner. By the end it was highly combustible, with victory or defeat hanging on the last ball. In farcical circumstances it was a Crouch End win.

Despite the 4th XI’s poor record for chasing, it was decided to back our bowling strength and field first on winning the toss. Dhamendra took a while to settle bowling up the hill and into the wind, while Kashif looked very dangerous down the hill. The Swamibapa openers rode their luck and by getting to 50 looked to have…

4th XI v. Bessborough (A) Sat 28th July 2012

Another tale of 4th XI battling failure, away to Bessborough on Saturday; and though it’s also a tale of a heartening recovery this wasn’t sufficient to prevent defeat.

Crouch End were embarrassed to be reduced to 8 for 5 after 7 overs.  It seems traditional that we give the opposition a bonus LBW decision in which the batsman swears he has hit it.  Peter was the victim this time.  Sam had already pushed a soft catch to mid-wicket, Andrew missed an out-swinger,…
