Crouch End 4th XI v Chiswick 3rd XI. Saturday 7th May 2016 at Chiswick.
Apologies for late arrival of report: the bones of it were presented by Peter on Sunday.
We bowled very well against their top order, Damendra and Joe bowling very few bad balls and keeping the run rate down to 3 an over for the first 20 overs. Hikmatullah’s late arrival meant his late addition to the attack, but his pace was good and his line exemplary and he proceeded to take three wickets. Unfortunately the two batsmen that brought to the crease were playing way below their true level. Asif and Chancel gave solid support; but nos. 4 and 5 got 100 and 50 respectively and on 46 overs Chiswick could declare on 271 for 4.
To come across such a reliable wicket at this time of year was a pleasant surprise. There were valiant attempts at forcing the pace, against steady bowling, from Tom, Roary (it’s not spelt like that but he answers to it), a passing Bobby Youdale and a belligerent Asif, but once those had failed, the tough target was declared officially unrealistic, and it was possible to leave, or pat back, the best that Chiswick thereafter could throw at us. Hikmatullah played with perfect discretion in getting to 50 not out; and Joe, who I suspect by now everybody knows, scored 2 not out in 14 overs.
So, one point for a losing draw; but not at all a bad start.
